Part 1 To Era getting a life
painting again

So three solid paintings this month, none of which I can stand
The lighting in here is so bad, I dont have the right tools or space!
The heat in here makes my paint dry too fast
and I cannot poly these in the house, or out! Ugh!
I painted my carpet today and my couch yesterday!

I am back..
Trying to get a life. My goals are to come up with enough finished paintings to do a show
No more online sales, I think this time around I will go through galleries. Great for those of you who have my paintings cause the first painting that I sell in a gallery will double the value of the paintings out there.. BUT bad for me in the short run cause the gallery will take 50%.

Anyways, none of this is a worry at this point cause I still need to get back to painting!

First of all. HAPPY HOLIDAZE!
I started working at Panera Bread last month and haven't found time to keep up with my art except a couple of commission pieces. To my collectors, please do not worry! This is NOT a set back! I will still be producing my art, and increasing it's value!
BTW Panera is awesome! If u have an opportunity to try them out, DO! I am currently training at the Elk Grove location on Bond Rd. Yummy food esp. the wonderful fresh bread! Awesome people! No joke! Please do not hesitate to email me for commission work, Q's, jobs, or shows!
I miss u all and will hopefully be offering some great deals via overstock soon.

SECOND SATURDAY in May 2007 I think I will be in two locations
the old DEL PASO site in Sacramento UPTOWN STUDIOS
and the 1020 12th St. in the MIDTOWN art walk between The Exploding Head Gallery and the K St. Toyroom~
I am planning to bring some larger pieces this time to the midtown venue and am considering selling some of my older abstract works that I was saving in my own collection because I am moving yet again and just cannot imagine packing up a 2500 sq ft basements worth of paintings quite honestly~ Mixed bag, really, those paintings are my retirement and have great value to me.. Might have a hard time getting them out of my hands, lol.
So sorry for not posting~ I am back to daily paintings as of today!

Artists Interview Artists: Eridanus Sellen
Eridanus Sellen, a Sacramento, CA based artist, participates in the Artists Interview Artists Project. Below Eridanus responds to another artist's five questions (Anabela Jevtovic from Toronto). In order to participate, Eridanus had to provide me with five questions for some other artist to answer. The assigning of questions to artists is completely random. If you're an artist and interested in participating, let me know.

1. In a real life, apart from working on your art, do you believe an artist senses are more defined then those of other people (for example, you are able to perceive more, you're more emotional, etc.)? If so, how do you take it? Is it a bad or a good thing? (in the context of a bad thing I mean that an artist could get a pile of these information and be burnt out)
Yes! As a child I was overly sensitive to others, their emotions, etc. As an adult, I have learned coping skills as all of us do, but still have that overwhelmed by my senses feeling - esp. when sick, tired, lonely - you know.
I was a drug addict for a large part of my childhood, grew up... on the streets for a long while. At 26 after many failed attempts I found a twelve step program that helped me deal with feeling "different than" emotions and have been clean 10 years now.
My heart FEELS at certain sites, I percieve beauty in rust stains, oil and water puddles creating rainbow like effects, water stains on a cement parking lot wall, the way the woman across the restaurant handles her wine glass with the tips of her fingers. I see a sunset, and see not only the beauty of the event, but where the shadow falls, where the moon is rising, and always wish I had my brush to paint it. Luckily, I have found a coping skill to deal with that as well, I travel with my camera at all times now.
2. Is there a philosophy (or any other brain activity that cannot be achieved without above average IQ) involved in a process of making art? In other words, can it be unconscious and is it an art then?
Everything we do is conscious and unconscious. Everything we see, do, and are, has already happened, already been done. We are walking a thin line thinking we are creating something new, something smart. History repeats, someone has been right where we have been before. I don't think we are infinetly wiser than others, but maybe that we percieve things differently, and that is of course, unconscious.
3. Do you believe that art should always provide a message to the rest of the world and if so, how much do you find yourself responsible for that?
I do not. Though I think those that create art to send a message are wonderful, and intriguing, and... well, thinking that what they have to say is the absolute and whole truth takes a lot of denial, don't you think? I do not want to have the kind of power it involves to have a message the whole world needs to hear. I have found myself creating a lot of womans rights, and a lot of religous statements into my collage works, and those, quite honestly, I have chosen to keep in my private collection.
4. Do you dream a dream of inventing something new in art? If you do, how do you plan to achieve your goal?
Again, history repeats. I DO however dream my paintings before I create a large portion of them. Those minutes where everything flies by from your day, when you first lay your head on the pillow in silence can say a lot if you lay silent and listen. I get images of colors, of lights, of scenes. I keep a notebook by my bed, and write them down when that happens as they are really fleeing flashes I would otherwise forget.
As far as Art goals, mine are simply to paint. To create. If it is new, so be it. If it is hated, so be it. If it is loved, then... great!
5. Is there such a thing as moral (ethics) in art?
Of course there is. Whether the morality is real, the ethic valued by some, is not shared by others. Does everyone have limits? Doubtful. But, that is something else to stand in awe of and take note.

Has been awhile since I said hi to Y'all
Working hard

Christmas was for the kids
WHich was new
Then my 5 year anniversary was spent in Yosemite of course
I am hanging again at the coffee shop
working on a banner project with Phantom Galleries
87 artists live auction and 3 months up on Del Paso Blvd
Opening up Second Saturday Art Market again in March for the year
Cesar Chavez Plaza will open in May and end in Nov. and be held every Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm
I have high expectations that all these projects will be a huge success
Working with Gervais Fine Art Festivals and planning a HUGE art festival in October on Del Paso Blvd.
and one in SF and one in Petaluma and another in Santa Rosa again in November as well
But i expect Sacramento to be huge.
The final destination for the live auction of the 87 banners will hopefully be The Art Market which is exciting
The local magazine cover was nice, but so far no huge sales out of it
I am sick of dumping out 1k a month to EBay and am trying my hand on overstock for all my new paintings before I give them up to galleries, furniture stores, and the coffee shop.
Feeling like my child needs me more than ever and I need to back off of my career fo ranother year or two
Health is still pretty poor, but I am more confident now than before, feeling like I am back in control of it at least.
36 years old, how did that happen? Still bop around thinking I a 20 and cute and all those things I was~ Well, I gave that up for infinite wisdom and a mellow disposition I certainly didn't have then. LOL.

Business wise, I am going to a very structured art marketing group and also doing a free for all once a month at the coffee shop on saturdays at 11am 3rd Saturday of the month for HELP with all these things I want to do and have already started. Problem is saturation in my area~

That, and my child, have led me to believe that focusing on selling online is still the best option for me at this time in my life.

There has been a lot of talk about me opening up a gallery in town, and that may happen still but I am not devoting time to it quite yet. Probably by years end there will be at least somewhere you can view my work full time in Sacramento.

I am loving teh furniture stores, and working one on one with interior designers both have led me in new direction in my art I might not have tried ~

I am SURE there are some things going on I have left out~

Her response was that one artist could just be jealous of another
I think the pictures, dates, and FACTS stand out by themselves do they not?
If they are uneducated, they need to hire someone who has an education in such things!
This should have been pushed to a higher up 6 months ago!I thought this place wanted our business?!?!
SO I accredit no place to do a successful job of not allowing outright copying~
I think they should all be a heck of a lot more responsible than they are being~

OK Stage 2 we can start listing on Overstock SRA for now and we need to let Carla know that we want to have a low tolerance rule for copying artists and a place where people will not list prints to put our artwork! This will be a long process, Carla today is setting up a proposal for disabling all right clicking on auctions and then will submit a proposal and want all of us to send individual emails to her to give to overstock as part of this proposal

The proposal will be that we have a low tolerance listing where we as ORIGINAL ARTISTS can list our artwork, where we can have a VERY specific policy on copying and a moderator who will promise to listen and report asap.

We will alos open up a discussion board as we move into overstock to help guide us through the process and iron out the wrinkles

I spoke with overstock directly this morning and I think we have a GO

There of course will need to be more talks, and lots of fixes but we are going to get our own space either under the already existent SRA or a new NO TOLERANCE category called ART artists representing themselves

In return we LIST there as original artists, and hopefully we can get ourselves some press as well this would be a huge deal guys~ Cheaper listing, a reason to get oyrselves in the news, and a safe place to list!

OK you guys this is AWESOME!

Not only is Overstock picking back up hit wise
but a lot of their main sellers who have been long time copy cat artists~ Some that have been permanently removed from EBay~ are being REMOVED!!

I wrote overstock when the A and A boards had Jennifer on and I saw there were going to be no changes and told them that if they were willing to take a hard line with some of the copycat artists that I know a TON of good original artists who would want to list there and maybe even get them publicity~No response yet email wise but I did mention one copy artist in particular just as an example

Crazy is how I feel today~

My idea was to write something more on myself

A friend, a very well off artist, says she wrote her eating habits, music she liked~ People asked her these things

So, gosh,

My clothing, my music changes as often as my moods

Van Morrison, Liz Phair's earliest works brings back memories of living in Seattle

and that song Euro trash girl~ cracks me up! Dunno who it is by~ don't remeber hearing it on the radio ever..hmm.

I have a funny story about Van Morrison. I was working at my restaurant and had a CD of his blaring and was alone, end of the day, cleaning a shelf behind the counter, back to the counter singing off key~ I have a great voice, but Van Morrison is not in my gendre'' and I turned around to him with that little bemused smirk he wears~ That was embarrassing! The joys of living in Marin~

What do I eat?

Well, if I haven't mentioned it before here, I am an alternative medicine nutritionist thanks to IET in N. California~ So, limited processed foods for the most part.

I am 35 years old, born in 1969 in December, a Sagittarius, which also comes out and touches the constellation I was named after, Eridanus.

I adore dogs and babies, not so much cats. They are my... Mya.

They walk on my wet paintings, stick their wet nose in my eye, and poop in a box in my home~ No thanks. And yes, I have one, sigh. His name is Jazz. I love him and all living creatures, just get dogs more than cats. Dogs eat mice not bring it home as a gift!

My dog, named after my first best friend was a wolf hybrid, husky mix. I think I got robbed cause besides her having a toe, she is small, and scared of her own tail. She gained weight with me when I got preggers which I thought was adorable. Could be the sudden lack of exercise but I like to think it was our strong bond, LOL.

Pregnancy was a hard deal for me. Bell's palsy, contractions and labor 4 months early, put on meds, and kept in bed. Had to work, and had just gotten married and moved an hour hour and a half away from the restaurant so I commuted three+ hours a day. Would fall asleep at the wheel constantly. Never stopped throwing up. Everything gave me a stomach ache~ except Jack n Box shakes : ) not my normal food LOL everyone thought the baby was going to be born green I ate so much spinach, and CRAVED dirt. Little mineral deficient~ lol.

What else can I tell you guys?

What makes me create what I do?

My thick abstracts? Mom didn't let me finger paint enough as a child` Just kidding! There is a LOT more to it then that. At a show a month or two ago some guy was hitting on me and at one point just stood there in a drunken stupor swaying forward and back and then Snap! comes to! and says I get it! You like squares and circles!

So there you have it folks, squares and circles.

What guides me through my abstracts are emotions~ I have been taught not to give my feelings "too much power" as they come and go so quickly, but, I like to capture those visions I have when I am laying in bed right before I fall asleep~ I do. I see most of my abstarcts before I paint them in a vision, or I open a new canvas and Alla Prima~ just start painting. I really love my abstracts, I know they are not for everyone, and I have developed quite a following with my flower series's` I like to add a lil abstarct into those too~

I find New Yorkers, and Chicago buy my abstracts, bless you, and Sacramento-ins purchase my flowers, poppies. More of a west crowd. For whatever that is worth.

OK desperatley trying to figure out why I am having such a SLOW month on Ebay all of my sales have been return customers~

I am giving 10% to charity, that is what I do, but I never felt comforatble telling people that, didn't want it to be a sales pitch~ But, I am seeing the red cross stealing monies, etc. and that makes me want to give DIRECT to those in need, which is what I do. I am seriously thinking about being a little lazy and having 10% of my auctions go to all these natural disasters, actually kind of proud that Red Cross discovered the people stealing? Kind of thought that they were all "trimming" a little off the top for themselves~ Now that I am physically working to prosper my community I think I would like to reach my help out a little further anyways.

Did I tell you guys I tried ACEO's this week? Those are cute and cheap.

Thought it would be fun, and nice to reach a wider audience, but besides that< I will be lucky if I make the money invested back so I am probably not going to do it long ;)

Well, I went for an interview with a local gallery, with about 30 paintings in the back of my car yesterday, to show them if they wanted, and to hang at the local Chamber of Commerce mixer that evening, and I park in a private parking lot un beknownst to me! My car gets towed the SECOND I am around the corner LITERALLY~
What a mess! $220. later, and all these broken frames in the back of the car, plus, I can't show the gallery my real work, only my portfolios.
It was like a bad movie, I walked up to where I had parked and there was another car there! yikes.
I called the police and reported it stolen....
Weird week. Still fighting being sick~ So is my poor son. Not a THING has sold on EBay all week which is mind numbing!

Planning a HUGE DECEMBER SECOND SATURDAY EVENT on Del Paso Blvd at 2135 Dale Ave. with Massa Peal Catering, Santa Claus, cookie decorating, painting for kids the whole nine yards :)
They will be lighting all of Del Paso Blvd with Christmas lights and then taking a ceremonial walk down to the galleries! It really will be a great night!

Considering just working for teh North Natomas Chamber as the coordinator to get events like this going, and make second saturday a hit again on Del Paso Blvd. as well as get the retail space filled and the community energetic again about that area. Maybe P/T so I can still paint and spend every waking second I can watching my son grow. As of right now, I offered my services gratis on the Second Saturday stuff because in the long run what benefits the community will benefit Carol's Second Saturday event and the entire art community out there.
Anyways, that is what came out of the North Sacramento UPTOWN Chamber of Commerce meeting Carol held last night at the kitchen.. really great event!
Now, why is it that my sales are so low on EBay and that this Blog still does not show up on google search engine?

I quit comments cause I was getting SPAM and people hitting on me?? Which was not the idea when I started this blog! It was to remind me where I was at when I painted what in my life later on "memiors" and to let you guys in on things and events in my life :)

Going up to Sonoma with my son in November~ I believe the 5th thru the 10th to see my girlfriends and attend holiday parties and show off my son.. It is my sponsors 20th year clean birthday and they are having a huge bash in Santa Rosa..yay.
Going to go stay with my bestist friend who took off and moved to .. someplace near San diego LOL I can't remember the name! and am going to stay there with Collin as well.
Lots of living on coaches for me and the kid ;)
Wanted to do the San Diego American Art Festival with my new family the Vitovsky's, drive down together, and stay together and sell our art kinda Bohemian week in San Diego but I don't see me pulling it off money wise~ I was set up to do the Crocker art Museum Holiday Festival but was just told they couldn't get the tent they were planning to so they are down 50 artists and I was one~ That too was a slap in the face because I am planning to do a summer show of the same caliber with Crocker Art Museum, and, because I got a personal invite to join the San Diego Harvest Festival by the owner and turned it down because they are the same dates~
Anyways, total ramblings here~

I started ACEO's today WHOSE IDEA WAS IT TO TRY AND PAINT A PICTURE ON 2 1/2 INCHES???!!! LOL. But, I tried~ Got some really nice 4x6 paintings but 2 1/2 "s?!?! Playing cards are bigger! Oh never mind I know who thought of it! It was POOT! LOL. Dang her!

Just checkin in~

Just did a quick google search and my blog STILL does not come up under Eridanus Studios??

How is that possible?

OK been sick for over a week~ Got one from hubby that he got from work, then my step son comes home for the weekend with a cold~ Not too bad, but, my 3 year old has no voice :(

Did the architectural series this week, and two very nice commission jobs~ The sun below which I altered slightly, and the big architectural piece most of you saw already in my newsletter

I have most of - and all I am ever going to see again - of the paintings back from New York thank you, Enbarek! Plus my show is over here in town, so I have over 100 paintings in my home!

I am doing a small local show this weekend to honor the broadway area of downtown Sacramento with the Greater Broadway Partnership, it is an arts and crafts festival their 5th annual at 16th x Broadway in the Tower Records parking lot from 10-5 PM of course I will be there an hour early~

I have started putting some of my 35 mm pictures through photoshop which is such a blast!

I recently got asked by a local gallery to take some more photos of local Sacramento spots to hang in his gallery so I spent a couple of days shooting hundreds of rolls of film~ The land park ones are spectacular! It is just so beautiful there!

I plan to bring some to the art and craft festival this weekend along with my other photos of Yosemite, and Old Town that most of you who have seen me at a festival have seen~ If you haven't had a chance yet I do plan to put them back up for auction next month now that I have a decent way inwhich to watermark them~ Probably will keep the local photos to the local galleries and shows but I will let you know when the gallery shows them -at least the locals, I will let know- probably not until March 2006.

I also have been following up on my dreams to play with silver and make handcrafted jewelry, mainly pendants~ I have been doing beadwork since I was 5, and all my friends have at least one necklace and earring set from Christmas past~ So, if all goes well in the next day or two, I will be bring the pendants to the Broadway show and will be selling them online as well by next month! Very highly quality stuff! I am really excited about it!

I am also progressing towards making the hand painted glass ornaments I made last year for the holiday season~ I have some beautiful opaque colors I can't wait to try out this year!

Lastly, all of you who know me, know I go nuts with candy making around the holidays, but this year, I am going to do some donation work with the candy, making baskets of goodies and donating the profits to local charities~ Probably fishes and loaves since I respect their work so much! Usually, I just drive around with baskets and stick them in front of random door wells with a note saying to do the same to three others~ Random acts of kindness :) but this year, they will have more purpose, and I will be selling them at the Crocker Art Museum holiday festival, and South Port Coffee for starters~ I will probably find a local venue as well~ Will let you know after this next Chamber of Commerce meeting in Oct. maybe I will ask Joyce of the Doiron Galery to carry them in the N. Natomas Area~ ANyways, enough said! Soo much to do to set up for the Sunday event~ PLEASE PLEASE COME OUT AND SEE ME !!!

WHAT TIME IS IT??

What a couple of weeks!!

Those festivals are HARD work! and addicting. We are talking about being in Campbell for the art and wine festival next weekend as well as Oct. 1st for the South Natomas Chamber dealio in front of our local library~ "celebrating natomas" howdy neighbor! Doing that with Diane Mattar my neighbor and a great artist! The Greater Broadway Partnership the following weekend as well as Second Saturday up on Del Paso Blvd.
Then, hopefully, I will get into the Harvest Festival up here in Sacramento~ The owner was nice enough to email me and ask me to come but by the time I said yes, they were already booked so I am on the waiting list~ Haven't heard back from Crocker about the Holiday SHow so I might just go ahead and sign myself up for the Harvest Festival in San Diego the weekend after Thanksgiving~ I know tehre is more but I cannot remember it now.

I am going to pick up my artwork from South Port Coffee tomorrow morning which I have to tell you I am really sad about! It was a great 6 weeks and I sold 10 paintings~ Sigh.

My great friend Manuela Valenti who is currently residing in Spain fixed my EBay auctions so you can SEE them now! THANK YOU MANUELA!! I wouldn't have made it on EBay at all if it wasn't for her!

So, that said, I am back on old EBay and Overstock, but the customers are SHY because I haven't been around a couple of months~ October is usually the start of the "good" season on Ebay so, I am hopeful, cause this family is FLAT broke!
I plan to do some hustling this weekend with some paintings and my portfolio to the local galleries~ Need to at least feel like I am doing something!

What else can I tell you?? Mountain View was HARD as I wrote in my news letter but it is a LOT like gambling and I am onboard with this whole festival thing!
